5 instances when top clubs gave arch rivals a Guard of Honour

There has been a tradition in European football where the newly crowned champions are given a guard of honour with their excellence throughout the season acknowledged by the other teams. There are talks over Liverpool giving the Blues a guard of honour this Sunday when the two sides square up at the Stamford Bridge.

This is not a first instance when a top rival has given a guard of honor to the newly crowned champions. Top clubs like Manchester United and Barcelona too have done so in the recent past. Here are five instances where a top club has given a guard of honor to their arch rival.

5) Rangers FC to Hearts FC – 2014/15

Rangers FC – a name that has been maligned far enough due to off the pitch issues. From being a powerhouse of Scottish football to being reduced to a side fighting promotion in the second division, a lot of water has flown under the bridge at the Ibrox.

The Old Firm side had possibly the worst moment in its history when they gave Hearts FC a guard of honour last month. Hearts have won the Scottish Championship comprehensively and are leading second-placed Hibernian by 23 points. Rangers are in third place three points adrift of Hibernian. They will play Queen of South in the Premiership qualification playoffs this weekend.

Hearts have been the best side in the Championship by a country mile as they have dropped only 12 points the entire season. Rangers, on the other hand, have been inconsistent but the Ibrox boys have made steady progress under the new found leadership of Stuart McCall.

The former Motherwell manager has transformed this disjointed Rangers side as they had a strong finish to the season. They not only mauled the new champions Hearts this past week which marks their resurgence under McCall.

4) Manchester United to Chelsea – 2004/05

Manchester United Chelsea guard of honour

Jose Mourinho announced his arrival to English shores with an arrogant swagger which baffled many observers of the game. He won two league titles in as many seasons in England which severely challenged the duopoly of Manchester United and Arsenal in the early part of the millennium.

Chelsea took the league status quo by the scruff of its neck as they ran riot throughout the season. Manchester United had their lowest ever finish in the Premier League era (at the time) when they finished third behind Arsenal.

United had to give the acrimonious guard of honor to the newly crowned champions Chelsea at Old Trafford. The Blues continued their imperial run of form as they humbled the Red Devils 3-1, thus rubbing more salt into their wounds. But this humiliation wasn’t going to deter the wily Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who accepted the challenge as he thundered these words in his autobiography,

“When, on May 10, 2005, we assembled a guard of honour for Chelsea, the new champions, at our ground, I had no intention of surrendering to Abramovich’s wealth in the months to come,” said Ferguson.

He cited that it was a big moment for Chelsea, but United had to mend their ways of being notoriously slow starters if they were to challenge Chelsea for the Premiership.

“Psychologically that was a big moment for Chelsea. They had won the League for the first time in half a century and could see themselves in another light. A lesson we took on board was that slow starts could no longer be tolerated if we were to face Chelsea, our big new challengers.”

The determination and will to succeed in Sir Alex’s words could not be ignored as it marked the beginning of a new rivalry between Chelsea and Manchester United.

3) Chelsea to Manchester United – 2006/07

After being mauled by Chelsea for two successive seasons, the perennial champions Manchester United roared back in style. They laid the gauntlet for others to follow and their determination to end Chelsea’s stranglehold on the league formed the crux of the Reds’ revival.

The rise of two young superstars at Old Trafford was one of the major reasons for the successful title charge as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo announced them to the world as the next big thing in the world football. United had wrapped up the title with two games to spare after Chelsea’s inability to get a positive result at the Emirates. They travelled to Chelsea as the newly crowned champions, winning their ninth title in 15 years of the Premier League era.

Chelsea were made to repay the favour which they got from their northern rivals a couple of seasons ago at Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson stayed true to his words as he dared the Russian oligarch with yet another title victory. Sir Alex didn’t shy away from returning the humiliation he faced with suitable interest as he fielded an untested side which featured the likes of Fangzhou Dong, Chris Eagles and Kieran Lee. One didn’t need rocket-science to understand what Sir Alex wanted to convey.

Such was the audacity of his team selection that one pundit in the box couldn’t hold back his tongue in the commentators box as he chided Manchester United’s team selection.

“John Terry’s been made to look an idiot,” he said. The same pundit even blasted Sir Alex by saying that he was making a mockery of Chelsea’s guard of honour.

The match ended in a drab 0-0 draw yet the damage had already been done by then.

2) Arsenal to Manchester United – 2012/13

AdTech Ad

Arsenal and Manchester United are two teams who have battled like gladiators season after season for glory of having domestic superiority at the end of the season, especially in the Premier League era. The rivalry stems back to late nineties, 1997 to be precise, when Arsene Wenger’s revolution upset the Sir Alex Ferguson’s title winning machine by clinching the title by coming from behind after a splendid second half of the season. From then on, both the teams have been engrossed in many titanic battles.

In the 2012/13 season, Manchester United won the EPL title in a canter as they wrapped up the league in April. This was the first instance in the Premier League when the title was wrapped up in April since Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea took the league by storm in 2005/06. Sir Alex, in his last season at United, made sure that he graced the retirement on a high and that too in some style!

After comfortably sealing the league title, United travelled to North London on 28 April and Arsene Wenger confirmed that his team would abide by the rules and offer their bitter rivals a guard of honour.  The highlight of the season and United’s stellar title win was majorly due to the signing of former Arsenal captain and Premier League’s Golden Boot winner, Robin van Persie.

There was a strong sense of bitterness lingering in North London after their talisman made the switch and also won the league title. Arsenal fans did not shy away from expressing their dissent as they continuously booed Van Persie. But he silenced them by earning and converting a penalty.

1) Barcelona to Real Madrid – 2007/08

Real Madrid returned to the pinnacle of Spanish football by winning the league title in thrilling fashion by pipping arch rivals FC Barcelona on a better head-to-head record in the 2006/07 season. Los Blancos took the insult a notch higher in the following season where they ran away with the league title.

Real Madrid won the league with a healthy gap of eight points over the second placed Villareal. Barcelona had a miserable season and finished third – 18 points off the leaders. But what compounded La Blaugrana’s misery was the greatest possible insult to any Catalan and that is to give Madrid a champions’ guard of honour, that too in enemy territory, at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Barca were forced to give Bernd Schuster’s Real Madrid a guard of honour in the 152nd El Clasico when both the sides faced each other in the 36th game of the season. Real entered the tie after comfortably sealing the league title the preceding week and made their rivals pay not only with a guard of honor but also with a humiliating 4-1 defeat.

Schuster ecstatically claimed that they wanted to celebrate in style as said, “We wanted to celebrate the title with our fans and play a great game and we did that,” Schuster told a news conference. “The attitude of the players was superb.”

Arsenal v Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday – how the Gunners could line up.

Arsene Wenger will be aiming for a first win in 13 attempts against one of Jose Mourinho’s teams, when Arsenal play Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

The Frenchman has lost seven and drawn five in all competitions in his head-to-head with Mourinho, but Arsenal head into the game in fantastic form, having collected more points than any other Premier League side in 2015, with 33 in the bag.

But an away win for the Blues would leave them just three points shy of sealing a first Premier League title since 2010, while dealing a blow to the Gunners’ optimism that next season they could take the crown.

The key to delaying Chelsea’s title charge would seem to be Arsenal scoring first, as Mourinho’s team have netted first in all 20 of their matches in all competitions in 2015, and are notoriously difficult to break down once they get in front.

Arsenal will also need to nullify the in-form Eden Hazard, who is favourite to land the PFA Player of the Year award and has 13 Premier League goals this season.

But the home side have in-form players of their own in the shape of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud, with the latter bagging 10 goals in his last 12 matches in all competitions.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will probably miss out with his latest muscle injury, while Per Mertesacker faces a late fitness test after picking up an injury against Reading in last weekend’s FA Cup semi-final win.

But who will Wenger pick for such a big clash? talkSPORT takes a look at how they could line up…

Arsenal - Football tactics and formationsGoalkeeper
Wenger’s preferred choice in the Premier League continues to be David Ospina and this won’t change for now.

Ospina has been a stand out player for Arsenal this season and is the only regular Premier League goalkeeper to statistically not make an error leading to a shot.

Wenger’s choice was made even easier after a nervy performance by Wojciech Szczesny in the win against Reading at Wembley on Saturday.

Defence
Mathieu Debuchy was given a start on Saturday in the FA Cup and will have done himself no harm in challenging Hector Bellerin for a start on Sunday.

However, Wenger may favour Bellerin’s pace in an attempt to stop Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

Nacho Monreal may also take his place back from Kieran Gibbs at left back and if Mertesacker passes his late fitness test, expect him to continue the partnership with Laurent Koscielny.

Despite the quality of the Chelsea team, Arsenal will no doubt be plased that the Blues will potentially be without Loic Remy and top goalscorer Diego Costa, through injury.

Midfield
Wenger has an array of midfielders to choose from for this game, with Jack Wilshere, Coquelin, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Flamini, Santi Cazorla, Tomas Rosicky and Aaron Ramsey all fit to play.

But look for the Arsenal manager to pick Coquelin, Cazorla, Ramsey, Sanchez and Ozil to start the game – a midfield combination that have served the team so well over the course of 2015.

The most important man in that midfield may be Coquelin and his ability to shut down Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas.

The Blues’ midfielder has an astonishing 20 assists for the club this season and is integral to how Mourninho likes to play his football.

If Arsenal can stop Hazard and Fabregas from playing, then they will have a great chance of closing the gap at the top of the league.

Attack
Danny Welbeck was largely ineffectual against a stubborn Reading defence at the weekend and it will be surprising if he gets the call to start up front ahead of Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman has 10 goals in 12 games of late and 18 in all competitions this season and Arsenal will be relying heavily on him to score the necessary goals to win the game.

Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United : Five Talking Points a head of arsenal crash.

Chelsea ended Manchester United’s six-match winning run thanks to Eden Hazard’s 13th league goal of the season. The Blues who will be crowned champions, if they win two of their remaining matches, started the game on the back foot.

Wayne Rooney hit the side netting from 18 yards, but it was Hazard who opened the scoring with the Blues first shot on target after latching onto a back heel from Oscar. Although the visitors enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, it was the Belgian who had the best opportunity of scoring the second goal, as he hit the post from a tight angle following Didier Drogba’s deflected shot.

Victory moved the Blues 10 points clear at the top of the table. Here are the five main talking points from the game at Stamford Bridge.

#1 Chelsea will win the league but not many hearts

Chelsea will win the league but not many hearts - Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United : Five Talking Points

Earlier in the season, when Diego Costa was scoring goals for fun and Chelsea were battering teams to submission, you almost wondered whether the Blues might suddenly become likeable. But Mourinho’s tactics against United and their run of wins by a solitary goal certainly put an end to that idea.

Whether it was bringing Kurt Zouma into midfield or deciding to defend their box once they scored the opener, the Blues tactics spoke of a side who wanted the result and didn’t care about how that happened. While it is easy to claim Chelsea’s tactics as defensive and boring, there aren’t many sides who are capable of holding the fort when an onslaught arrives.

For all of United’s possession, they had to resort to pot shots from distance in their bid to score. While games aren’t always won by defences, championships are and the hosts certainly have the defence to do just that.

#2 Zouma executes plan to perfection

Zouma executes plan to perfection - Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United : Five Talking Points

One of the reasons why United have been on this six-game winning run in the league is because of their ability to overload the left flank. Marouane Fellaini, who has been unplayable as a deep-lying target man met his match in Kurt Zouma. The Frenchman was drafted into this game with just one instruction, stop the Belgian from dominating in the air.

Although Zouma was unable to prevent him from winning most of his aerial duels, he did manage to provide support for Branislav Ivanovic, who was seldom left exposed at the back. The 20-year-old made Fellaini work for every header and kept a close eye on him throughout the game. In doing so, helped contain United’s biggest threat and forced them into trying other ways of finding a path to a goal.

#3 Tale of two contrasting No.8

Tale of two contrasting No.8 - Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United : Five Talking Points

On the right flanks for both sides were two players who you would struggle to describe as wingers. One was sold by Chelsea for not doing his bit defensively and the other was the man who replaced him, mainly because of the aforementioned qualities.

This game clearly highlighted just why Mourinho let Mata go and why Oscar has been one of the first names on the clean sheets. While the Spaniard showed signs of life in the attacking third, it wasn’t enough to make Mourinho regret his decision. The Brazilian, however, hassled and harried United’s  players and made life difficult  for them.

Although neither sparkled offensively, Oscar’s defensive discipline helped his side contain the threat posed by United on the left flank. On a day when desire and discipline were required, Mata’s intricate touches and passes failed to make the difference for the Red Devils.

#4 Hazard makes the difference

Hazard makes the difference - Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United : Five Talking Points

While he may not be the side’s leading goal scorer or creator, Eden Hazard is without a doubt, Chelsea’s most important attacker. In a game of few chances, the Belgian scored one and almost got another and once again reiterated why he deserves to be the PFA Player of the Year.

When the game is so tight and close, you want your best players to go out and make the decisive move. That is precisely what Hazard has done with remarkable consistency this season. And it is that consistency, coupled with his resilience and ability to get back up, despite being one of the most fouled players in the league, which makes him stand out in a side that is not short on attacking quality.

#5 Frustrated Fabregas fails to make an impact

Frustrated Fabregas fails to make an impact - Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United : Five Talking Points

One of the questions that was asked following Fabregas’ arrival at Stamford Bridge was whether he could operate as a central attacking midfielder. For much of the season, that question had remained unanswered as he has been playing alongside Matic in central midfield. Mourinho’s pragmatism presented the Spaniard with the opportunity to answer it against United.

Although he got little in the way of support from his side, Fabregas didn’t have the impact on the game offensively that he would have wanted. With his back to goal, there was none of the  silky smooth passing that made him the league leader in assists. Instead, he was isolated and looked like a lamb separated from the herd, chasing shadows and conceding silly free kicks.

But the way in which he defended in the second half, cutting off spaces and opportunities for through balls, will please his manager, who has once again managed to make an offensive player put a shift in for the side.

Arsenal have to beat Chelsea – Not the other way around!| Editors Pick

Fabregas will return to the Emirates for the first time as a Chelsea player

It’s now the game of the season on Sunday at the Emirates. Jose Mourinho’s side have led the Premier League from day one but face their toughest test against Arsenal but are they now a very realistic threat?

After Saturdays performance and three points against Manchester United, you can see this as being billed as the side with plenty of attacking flair, on a fantastic run against the side “limping” over the line.

So what of Arsenal?

The neutrals will get behind Arsene Wenger and his team to keep the title race going as long as possible and I guess the football purists will do the same but it’s important to remember that football these days is a results business just as Louis Van Gaal discovered at Stamford Bridge.

But for the FA Cup last season, we all remember just how frustrated the Gunners fans had become at their lack of trophies. Twelve months on, they are back in the FA Cup Final will a chance to retain the trophy and are now in second place in the Premier League. Do we think that Arsenal have improved that much?

I look at Arsenal and everything from their midfield going forward is difficult not to like. Coquelin has been a revelation in the holding role, Alexis Sanchez has had a fantastic season, Santi Cazorla pulls the strings, Mesut Ozil has found form and Oliver Giroud is scoring goals on a regular basis.

The Arsenal Achilles Heel remains

However, for me their problem still lies within their back four and goalkeeper. Just look at that happened against Monaco at the Emirates for example. Their lack of defensive discipline has been their Achilles heel for god knows how many seasons and has literally cost them a decent crack at the title every year.

Look at the days of Dixon, Adams and Winterburn for example or even Cole, Lauren and Campbell – Arsenal built their attacking flair from a solid base. For some reason, as those players left the club, they were never replaced with the same quality.

You can have all the flair players in the world going forward but you MUST have those same players willing to work just as hard without the ball to support your defence otherwise you will always struggle. Coquelin can’t do it all by himself and we shall find out if I am right on Sunday!

Jose Mourinho – the master of big games

Most would have decided already that Chelsea will head to the Emirates with instructions from Jose Mourinho to park the bus. As negative as some people think that is, it’s game management. If the two sides positions were switched around and this game was at Stamford Bridge with Arsenal needing just two wins for the title would he do the same?

You can bet your life that Jose would have studied Arsenal to find their weakness and to develop the tactical plan he believes in. Think back to United last weekend and to his interview after the game. He spoke of how the game played out how he wanted it to be and how we expected. Expect the same on Sunday.

Do we honestly believe that Chelsea will park the bus? I am not so sure. I believe we will look to remain solid but at the same time, utilise our attacking flair when we have the ball to punish Arsenal and their back four that isn’t as solid as some people make out to be.

Fabregas is key

We can all pretty much tell you now the reaction Cesc Fabregas will receive at the Emirates but that will not bother him or Chelsea at all. If anything it will inspire him to focus on playing well because let’s face it, many will have you believe his form has dipped as it apparently always does towards the end of the season.

Many people will pinpoint Eden Hazard as the main danger and rightly so but I have a different take on things ahead of this one. Hazard is nothing without the ball, Sanchez the same as they both feed on service and being given the ball in the right areas.

Cesc Fabregas is half the threat to the opposition when he plays further forward so I expect him to revert back in the deeper position next to Nemanja Matic. It’s from that position that Chelsea will rely on Fabregas to pick up the ball and to dictate the game.

As we have seen at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, given space and time with the ball at his feet, Fabregas can split a defence wide open with a single pass that can make the difference.

Conclusion – It’s all up to Arsenal

I am a Chelsea fan so I am obviously biased however, you have to look at why Chelsea are so far ahead of Arsenal and everyone else this season. Jose Mourinho spotted the frailties within the make-up of his team and went out and key players in that have made the difference.

Whether you describe Chelsea as a well oiled machine or boring is down to you but the facts and figures are there for all to see. Sunday is about Arsenal taking the game to Chelsea to try and beat them and nothing more. Chelsea do not have to win the game and will be happy to sit in their defensive shape giving Arsenal time on the ball, knowing that with the likes of Fabregas, Hazard, Willian, Oscar and Remy we have the pace and flair to really hurt them on the counter attack. For me the outcome of this one literally comes down to just how far Arsenal have come. Do they have enough going forward to break Chelsea down? Do they have enough to deal with Chelsea when we attack them? On Sunday we find out!

How the Arsenal-Chelsea result can affect the Blues’ Premier League title hopes| Analysis..

Fabregas Sanchez
The previous meeting between the two teams this season saw Chelsea win 2-0 at Stamford Bridge

There is no doubt that the London derby between Arsenal and Chelsea to be played at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday will play a significant role in the Blues’ push for the Premier League title. Neither recent history nor Arsene Wenger’s record against Jose Mourinho will be pleasing for the Gunners.

The North London side last emerged victorious over Chelsea in October 2011 when they ran out 3-5 victors over their London rivals. In the 7 games that have transpired since, the Gunners have lost 5 and drawn 2. Further, the Arsenal manager has come up 12 times against Mourinho and has failed to beat him on all occasions (D5 L7).

There is, however, a major factor to consider Arsenal have been in formidable form recently – they have come out winners in their last 8 EPL fixtures (24 out of 24 points won). It isn’t just their wins but the fashion in which they have carved out these victories that has been impressive. As Wenger said, “Football is down to the fact that the performance on the day will decide the game and the result, so let’s focus on that.”

Arsenal, who are second in the Premier League table with 66 points and 6 games to go, can get a maximum of 84 points at the end of the season. This means that table toppers Chelsea who are on 76 points need at least 9 points from the 18 available to them to ensure that the title will go to Stamford Bridge.

There is, however, the small matter of the London Derby that will be crucial to Chelsea’s title chances. Here’s a look at how it will pan out for Chelsea in different scenarios:

If Chelsea win

A win will virtually guarantee Mourinho’s men the title. It will extend Chelsea’s 10-point lead to 13 points ahead of Arsenal. Crucially, this also means that Arsenal’s points tally at the end of the season can only be a maximum of 81 points.

This would mean that if the Blues secure three points against Leicester City in the next fixture, they will be champions. And if that happens, Liverpool will be expected to give the Blues a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge.

If the match ends in a Draw

A draw in this game would leave the West London club requiring a maximum of 6 points from the remaining 5 games to win the title.

This means they could win the title against Crystal Palace with a total of 83 points that would put them ahead of Arsenal’s highest possible points tally for the season (82).

If Arsenal win

A loss to Arsenal will leave the league leaders needing 9 points from 5 games to seal the title. Interestingly, this scenario will leave Chelsea under the most pressure as they come up against relegation-battling Leicester City, a rejuvenated Crystal Palace and a top-4 chasing Liverpool in their next three games.

While we’re assuming wins for Arsenal and Chelsea in fixtures other than while they face each other, the Premier League has never failed to surprise us and surely there are a few more twists ahead of us. The question that remains is, which way will the pendulum swing?

Arsenal’s biggest hurdle on paper looks like Manchester United at Old Trafford in the penultimate weekend of the EPL. This season still has a long way to go.

Didier Drogba fit but Diego Costa doubtful for Arsenal clash: Jose Mourinho|Premier Legue..

Jose Mourinho Press Conference
Jose Mourinho is unbeaten against Arsene Wenger in 12 previous meetings

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s trip to the Emirates, Jose Mourinho told the media that Didier Drogba is “good” for the tie, while he isn’t sure of Loic Remy and would review Diego Costa’s situation tomorrow.

The Portuguese manager says that Remy and Drogba have done well in Costa’s absence but “the reality is that we are coping with the difficulties of every match without him.”

He also said regarding Chelsea’s striker situation that young Dominic Solanke did not play with the U-21s this week so that he could be ready if needed for the first team.

Eden Hazard’s links to Real Madrid’

Mourinho reiterated that Eden Hazard just signed a new contract and has had a lot of time to think about it. He also said, “He likes Chelsea, he likes the team and made a commitment.

“I don’t think he’s interested in going [to Madrid].”

On his impressive record against Arsene Wenger

Jose compares his record with his time at Real Madrid and his relationship with the Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone. He believes that the achievement for him will be to win the match on Sunday and the past 12 games do not matter.

He said, “I don’t look to numbers. I don’t look to what I did against this manager or that club. I think my players don’t even know about the details.

“What they [the players] care about is how we work all week and the confidence we have. I think this is what matters.”

On Patrick Bamford’s future

Patrick Bamford on loan from Chelsea at Middlesbrough was recently voted Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year. When asked about his future, Mourinho replied, “I don’t think he should be thinking about his future.

“I think he should be thinking about the next two matches.”

“He can be promoted.”

Fabregas’ return to the Emirates

Earlier, Arsene Wenger urged Arsenal fans to show Cesc Fabregas respect on his return to Emirates. When asked about the same Jose Mourinho characteristically avoided speaking about Fabregas’ past.

However, he praised Fabregas’ performances for Chelsea and said “We explained our project. Good projects usually mean titles. He wanted that. That’s all I can say.”

On Fabregas’ return to the Emirates stadium, he said, “Frank Lampard came back to Stamford Bridge with Manchester City and there was no problem. I can’t see why it can’t be the same for Fabregas at Arsenal.”’

Finally, when asked, “How do you see this title compared to…”, Jose interrupted saying, “We didn’t win this one yet. There are no ifs in football, only yes or no.”
